Helping Hands for Single Mom’s second annual “5K Walk-n-Run for Success” will be held Sunday March 21, 2010 at the ASU West Campus, 4701 West Thunderbird in Glendale. The 5K Walk-n-Run will raise funds to help underwrite college tuition and related expenses for single moms enrolled in the Helping Hands program. Single participant registration fee is $25 but why walk alone? Forming your own team with friends, family and co-workers is a lot more fun and think how much more money you can raise as a group.

The 5K Run course is being laid out by Runner’s Den and ASU West. On site registration begins Sunday morning at 7:00am with the race starting at 8:30. After 5K participants return from the race / walk they will be greeted by 100 single mom families from nine local colleges and universities. These single mom families will join in the morning’s activities to celebrate their success in college. Event festivities include: a large kids zone, live music, face painting, the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, food, and vendors. The 5K Walk-N-Run for Success is made possible by a $5,000 donation from USA Funds and other community partners. It will also be a special morning for the single mom college students. Thanks to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, twenty single mom college students will be awarded $250 scholarships at the event. Additionally, the Maricopa Community College District is providing lunch for 100 single mom families from nine local colleges and universities. Lastly, Camelback Volkswagen – Subaru – Mazda will present a check for $5,000 to provide assistance with books for forty Helping Hands clients.

Helping Hands for Single Moms offers single moms an opportunity to gain financial independence through higher education. By removing the “barriers to success” that a single mother faces in college, the Helping Hands’ program increases the probability of her successfully completing a course of study. We believe education is the solution. In 2008 Helping Hands for Single Moms received a “Be More” award from KAET Channel 8, the “Blue Ribbon Organization” award from Collaboration for a New Century and the “12 Who Care” award from 12 News. In 2009 Helping Hands received the “Pathways to Postsecondary Education” award from the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education.
